Trailer hitch and wiring harness?

Does anyone have the dealer installed trailer hitch and wiring harness for the Palisade? The install instructions appear to show a four pin connector. However you need a seven pin connector for electric trailer brakes.

The spec for the Palisade towing capacity states 1600 lbs without trailer brakes and 5000 lbs with trailer brakes. If that’s really true I can’t believe the Palisade doesn’t provide a seven pin connector and electric brake controller pre wiring. Unfortunately my dealer is clueless on the trailer hitch or wiring.

I would appreciate anyone’s thoughts and experience regarding equipping the Palisade for electric trailer brakes.

I had the dealer install a Reese 7-pin harness and connector from eTrailer. It is inexcusable that Hyundai advertises 5000 lb capacity (with electric brakes) but the vehicle is not wired for a 7-pin connector. Smacks of false advertising. I mounted the controller on the fuse box door. It has to be mounted in a fore-and-aft direction for the inertial sensor to work properly.

STOP! I have the OEM hitch and wiring set up and it looks horrendous!! Go with these guys, they JUST developed it for the Palisade and it is the BEST available. Bolts right up without modifications. I agree it’s a great option, I would purchase it too. Just keep in mind it doesn’t work well with any kind of weight distribution/ sway control if you are planning on towing a small trailer above 3,000 pounds. I had to go the OEM route in order to use an Andersen WD setup

FWIW I purchased the OEM hitch (including the tow bar & pin, but no harness) from hyundaiaccessorystore.com. With the new-customer incentive it came out to $308 shipped. I bought the harness from a seller on ebay, it's a Tekonsha 118784, cost me $43 delivered (including Virginia tax, which eBay now collects). I'm certain it's the same harness as OEM.

The OEM hitch is manufactured by Curt, but is not exactly the same as their newly-released aftermarket unit (p/n 13427). The Hyundai OEM one includes an additional bracket for holding the 4-pin harness plug securely next to the receiver.

In addition, the OEM hitch includes a mix of metric and standard hardware, whereas the aftermarket version is all metric. Same basic mounting points though.

I'd bet the aftermarket hitch will soon be available for close to $200 so you can definitely save some cash over OEM if you want. I like the extra bracket, makes for a tidier installation and usage, but everybody will have their own thought on whether that's worth $100...

You posted EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for 6 months! I’ve been waiting for a 3rd party hitch from curt, with a higher than 351 tongue weight rating and can handle a weight distribution setup. Thank you for posting this, I will now be ordering the curt hitch.

I noticed the Curt hitch (CMF13427) had become available last week and visited the local U-Haul to schedule the installation. At U-Haul, the cost of the hitch is $204.95, which is a discount from the Curt price if you order the hitch directly from Curt. The Curt website shows the price of the hitch as $279.02. The total installation cost at U-Haul will be $377.40 including tax. According to the U-Haul sales person, the wiring part needed is CQT118784. The cost of this part is $34.95. Installation is scheduled in a week.

That's a good price on the wiring harness at U-Haul, I wonder if they'll sell it for that price if you do the install yourself? The wiring install is trivially simple. Pop three retainer clips off the splash guard, pull straight down to remove it off the captive nuts. The OEM wiring is taped in place and has a protective plug cover which just pops out. Plug in the new harness, secure it with supplied zip ties, and route it to the center of the bumper. Takes 5 minutes or less, no need to drop the spare or raise the back of the vehicle.

Assuming the pictures of the Hyundai hitch and the curt are correct, they are designed a little differently. The Hyundai looks to drop the entire bar down all the way below the number starting right from the mounts. The Curt looks to drop the bar a lesser amount, and then has a drop of a couple of inches right at the receiver box. If it looks as it seems, the Curt may not be as visible below the back of the car, with mainly the receiver box showing. I have mine on order for delivery early next week, interested to see how it fits and if the photos of both hitched are true.

I ordered mine through SuspensionConnection.com at $186.72 plus $25.95 Shipping. They mention a 10% discount as well, but that does not apply to Curt products.

That's a very good point and I think you're quite right. The oem primary tube includes the vertical drop dimension whereas the curt aftermarket achieves the drop with the welded plate steel brackets.

There also look to be some small dimensional differences in the right angle plates which cradle the two frame rails on either side. Both hitches use all the same mounting points however.

No, the standard harness is only 4 pin. You'd have to do some extra work for a 7-pin setup, running your own wiring and fuses, and presumably the trigger for a brake controller if that's why you want 7-pin. My guess is the factory wouldn't officially bless such a setup. 5k lbs with a surge brake would be easier to set up, certainly.

I dunno. I think most trailering with a vehicle like this is probably going to be a boat with surge brakes. 5k isn't enough for an enclosed car hauler, it's only barely enough for an open deck car trailer with a small car on it (1500lbs for a light open trailer, no more than 3500 for the payload). So landscape utility trailers, small box trailers, etc. are all 4-wire setups.

Remember this is a unibody vehicle, and while the hitch mounts are pretty solid, they're nothing like the frame rails on your Silverado.

I’d be honestly very surprised if they created a 7-pin factory harness, the 2013-2019 Santa Fe XL has the same 5K towing capacity and they never made a 7-pin adaptor. There are also a few other SUV mid-size car manufacturers that only do 4-pin adaptors vs a 7-pin, so Hyundai/Kia aren’t the only ones doing this, as the majority of folks are towing smaller trailer loads. I went by the way of the manual recommending a trailer shop do the 4-pin to 7-pin conversion, so I don’t void the factory warranty.

Both you guys are right. I am in no hurry so I am Optimistic and will patiently wait for a bit and hope they will adapt. The worst that can happen is I get the Palisade or Telluride at below MSP as inventory increases. I will still keep the Silverado regardless, to use on my bigger boat and use the new vehicle for towing my smaller boat. I also have a 2008 Nissan Versa that I use daily. Also hoping that in time they will both correct the Android Auto fullscreen issue. (and Palisade will get folding mirrors as they do in Dubai market.)

My Palisade Ltd came pre-wired and with the 4-pin connector. I'm still deliberating the need for the 7-pin conversion as most of the teardrop (or squaredrop) trailers on the market are < 1,500 LB, which makes it legal to tow without breaks in each of the 50 states (only 4 states require breaks on anything 1,500 and above, others start from 3,000 up). Typically electric breaks add about $350 to the trailer cost PLUS around $100-150 for a reasonably good break controller and installation labor on my Palisade. My perspective trailer manufacturer tells me it would be just money wasting with no added value. However, should I still decide to waste those $500 all what would be needed is a some kind of break controller that comes with its own wiring kit that the installer would use to tap in some existing break related connection.
